A True Return on Your Investment

Ontario 4-H Council

A gift to the Ontario 4-H Foundation is a gift for the future of 4-H in Ontario. The Ontario 4-H Foundation, established in 1998 as a registered charity, provides the opportunity for individuals, families or organizations to give something back to 4-H Ontario, youth leadership and volunteer development. The Foundation helps you make your charitable giving easy, flexible and effective. There are many ways in which you can give to the Ontario 4-H Foundation. Following are choices to consider in building your legacy to perpetually benefit 4-H in Ontario.

Goal and Commitment To You

Up to 24 respected volunteer trustees from across rural Ontario make up the Board of the Ontario 4-H Foundation. All are dedicated to ensuring a strong and healthy future for 4-H Ontario. The strategic plan of the Foundation, the growth and effective management of sponsorship and endowment, is linked to and supports the strategic plan of the Ontario 4-H Council. Our goal is to simply help you achieve your goal of supporting 4-H in a way that is meaningful to you.

We will be pleased to work with you and your advisors to design a charitable giving strategy that complements your financial and estate planning while accomplishing your personal needs and philanthropic goals. We recognize each individual, family or organization we work with has unique charitable interests and financial circumstances. We pledge to work with you in confidence and to protect your anonymity if you so wish. The careful and accountable management of any funds entrusted to us is of utmost priority to the Foundation.

Grants from the Foundation endowment funds will be allocated into four specific funding areas of the 4-H Ontario program each year. This will be done on the advice of specific donors if they so choose or on the advice of the Ontario 4-H Council. Those targeted funding areas, otherwise known as Pillars are:

  1. Leadership access (travel bursaries, “angel” funding, etc.)
  2. Program development
  3. Local 4-H association empowerment
  4. Strategic initiatives

Donor Benefits – How You Can Give Click to expand

Your gift becomes part of a permanent endowment fund that will support the 4-H Ontario program forever.

  • Your donation responds to needs that are current and relevant.
  • Your gift results in tax savings for you and your estate.
  • You are making a fiscally responsible investment. We are able to minimize costs by pooling funds for investment and administrative costs. We take care of all the administrative and grant making activities in order to save you
  • precious time and money
  • Our volunteer Board of Trustees share your interests in supporting 4-H Ontario
  • and effectively direct the activities of the Foundation.

Gift of Cash

With gifts of cash, you have the immediate satisfaction of seeing your gift at work. This is the simplest way to give and you receive a donation receipt for the full amount.

Gift of Securities

With a gift of stocks, bonds, mutual funds or employee stock option shares, you will receive a donation receipt for the market value of the securities on the date of transfer to the Foundation. The taxable gain on gifted securities transferred in-kind is 0%.

Gift of Life Insurance

A gift of life insurance can make a large impact at a modest cost. By naming the Ontario 4-H Foundation as owner and beneficiary of the policy, you receive a donation receipt for
the policy’s cash value and any future premiums you pay. You may wish to consider one of these means:

Bequest

Leaving a gift in your will is the most common form of planned giving. You retain full control of your assets and your estate receives a donation receipt that can be used to reduce income tax payable by the estate.

Gifts of Real Estate or Other Assets

Real estate or other assets, such as privately-held companies or works of art, may also be given to the Ontario 4-H Foundation. A donation receipt will be issued for the fair market value of the gift.

Gifts of Residual Interest

When donating real estate, for example, you can retain the use of the property for life with a gift of residual interest. You will receive a donation receipt for the present value of the gift that can be used to offset tax on associated capital gains. The gifted asset is not subject to probate.

Donor Designated Fund – Getting InvolvedClick to expand

A Donor Designated Fund allows you to make a gift to the Ontario 4-H Foundation, and be involved in designating the grants from your gift to a specific purpose then have it managed on your behalf by the Foundation.

How It Works

  • You make a gift today to the Ontario 4-H Foundation – you can give cash, appreciated stocks, real estate, or other assets.
  • Your gift is placed in an endowed fund that is carefully invested and can grow over time.
  • We set up a special fund in your name, in the name of your family or business or in honour of any person or organization you choose.
  • You, as the donor receives tax benefits the year the gift is made.
  • You recommend the intended use for your fund – working with the Ontario 4-H Foundation staff to support the 4-H programs, opportunities, or needs which you care about.
  • Your recommendations are presented to the Ontario 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees for approval.
  • We handle all the administrative details and issue the grant award(s) as per your Board Approved recommendation, in the name of your fund (if you prefer, your awards can be made anonymously).

A True Example

Byron and the late Katherine Beeler are well known amongst their friends and business acquaintances for their belief in the importance of leadership and citizenship. When Byron was inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame, friends approached Byron and Katherine about establishing a legacy endowment fund in their name. The Katherine and Byron Beeler Leadership and Citizenship Endowment Fund was established with the Ontario 4-H Foundation in the fall of 2005, under the Foundation’s Leadership Access Pillar. The fund has grown quickly thanks to the generosity of the Beeler’s friends and associates and the Beeler family themselves.

Donor Advised Funds – You Have A VoiceClick to expand

Establishing a Donor Advised Fund allows you to make a gift to the Ontario 4-H Foundation and then remain actively involved in suggesting uses for your gift.

  • You recommend uses for your fund each year– working with the Ontario 4-H Foundation staff to support the 4-H programs, opportunities, or needs which you care about.
  • Your recommendations are presented to the Ontario 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees for approval.
  • We handle all the administrative details and issue the grant award(s) as per your Board Approved recommendation, in the name of your fund (if you prefer, your awards can be made anonymously).

A True Example:

A dairy farm family had reached a point in their business that they were financially secure. With their family’s needs cared for, their goal was to create a lasting legacy to benefit their community. Wanting to focus on leadership development within youth, the family chose the Ontario 4-HFoundation to build their legacy.

The family wanted to be actively involved in the direction of the grants resulting from their funds every year. This led to a cash donation to the Ontario 4-H Foundation Endowment Fund and to the establishment of a Donor Advised Fund in their name. Each year, the family meets with staff of the Ontario 4-H Foundation to discuss and review their goals for direction of their fund’s grant(s) for that year. One year, for example, they wanted to ensure their county’s 4-H dairy members could experience the learning, fun and friendship opportunities that come from participating in a national show. That year’s grant went to covering part of the team’s costs and in particular that of one 4-H member who needed “angel funding” to enable her to go.

As the years went by, the family continued to contribute to their fund as they worked with the advice of their accountant and financial planner. With the fund growth, came the opportunity for the family to expand their granting efforts. They started to fund a judging school for their local 4-H Association lead by well known judging clinicians and sent the top three members from that day to a national competition. They hope one day to take the school to a regional level!

The founders’ involvement in directing grant decisions was transferred to their children in later years, and in so doing they instilled in their children the great feeling that comes from investing in your own community. The family fund has never quit growing and giving. It won’t be long before the grandchildren of the founding family are involved in continuing the “building of the family’s legacy to their community” through 4-H dairy youth members. At any time the family may request that the Foundation take over direction of their fund if that need arises. Perhaps your family relates to this example of legacy building. Talk with the Ontario 4-H Foundation today about the possibilities.

Bequest By Will – A Legacy of LivingClick to expand

Having and updating a will is something we all need to do. The process of drafting a will creates an opportunity to reflect on what is important to you, and ultimately a will lets you decide where you wish to have the proceeds of your estate directed. For many a will creates the opportunity to “give back” to those who gave them so much, while also providing the opportunity to “invest into the future” of what you care so much about - your family, your community and the organizations that continue to create positive impacts. As you proceed through your chapters of life, your will needs to be updated to ensure it reflects your wishes based on your current situation and goals.

Including a charitable bequest in your will is a simple way to make a lasting gift to your community. When you make this gift through the Ontario 4-H Foundation, your gift is managed so it benefits 4-H forever.

How It Works

  • You include the Ontario 4-H Foundation in your will as a bequest; your lawyer can help you with the recommended language.
  • You work with a representative of the Ontario 4-H Foundation to choose how your gift will be recognized and to where the proceeds will be directed. While all funds are pooled for investment purposes, we manage disbursements of annual proceeds on a per fund basis. This allows specific direction and recognition to be easily achieved.
  • During the planning meeting(s) we will work with you to determine:
  • If you wish to establish a fund in your name, in the name of your family, in honour of a person or organization close to you, or in anonymity.
  • Where you wish to have the annual proceeds earned from your perpetual gift directed. For example, you might wish to direct them generally to one of the Ontario 4-H Foundation’s pre-established Pillars of Priority, specifically to a pre-determined use you establish, or to be blended with the proceeds and purpose of another existing fund; and
  • How your gift will be recognized and the message that will be shared on your behalf (whether in person by a family member or representative or in writing).
  • Upon death, we follow the pre-determined instructions and proceed with the investment and management of your legacy.
  • Our charitable gift is excluded from your assets for estate tax purposes.
  • We handle all administrative details. Your gift will be placed into an endowment that is invested and will grow over time.

Gift By Life insurance – An Extraordinary GiftClick to expand

Life insurance can allow donors to make extraordinary gifts at a manageable cost. Life insurance proceeds are not subject to probate if the beneficiary is designated, nor do they reduce the value of other assets.

How It Works

New Life Insurance Policy: You name the Ontario 4-H Foundation as the irrevocable owner and beneficiary of the policy, and receive tax credits for premiums payable then and in the future.

Transfer Existing Policy: You may transfer a current life insurance policy to the Ontario 4-H Foundation on an irrevocable basis. You may be eligible to receive a charitable tax receipt for the cash surrender value, and will be eligible to receive a charitable tax receipt for any subsequent premiums paid after the transfer.

A True Example

“Fred” had always made giving to his community a personal priority. In meetings with his advisor, he began to consider including a charitable gift to 4-H Ontario, a program he cared for deeply. He knew that by supporting the Ontario 4-H Foundation he could create an impact in the future for 4-H. After considering his options, he decided to establish a gift to the unrestricted fund under the Strategic Initiatives Pillar of the Ontario 4-H Foundation.

The anonymous gift would take place after he passed away, as he designated the Ontario 4-H Foundation as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. “Because it’s endowed, my gift will make a difference forever,” he says. “The life insurance option matched my giving goals with my financial capacity knowing my annual premiums would enable a much larger gift for this great organization in the future. The tax deduction on the annual premium reduced the cost of the gift. A great solution for me and a great future gift for the Ontario 4-H Foundation to have, invest and manage grants at their discretion to the greatest needs of 4-H in Ontario.”
