2013 Sheep Club Wrap-Up

Submitted by Taylor Bazinet
Carleton 4-H - East Carleton 4-H Sheep Club
(Posted November 25, 2013)

The final meeting of the Carleton 4-H Sheep Club was hosted by Maple Meadow Farms and was focused on preparing lambs for show. Members learned some shearing techniques and how to trim their lamb's feet. A practice showmanship clinic also gave members the opportunity to learn how to lead and set up the feet of their lambs in the show ring. We also had a chance to wash a lamb and get it ready for the fair.

Once again, the Carleton 4-H Sheep Club was very successful at the Metcalfe Fair Achievement Day and Regional 4-H shows. All members enjoyed showing their lambs and meeting new people from other clubs and counties. Members showed great cooperation and hard work. Mitchell Bazinet won the Grand Champion Market Lamb, and all members did very well in their respective showmanship classes.

The year-end awards banquet for the Vernon Dairy, Metcalfe Beef, Lifeskills, and Carleton Sheep 4-H Clubs was held on November 19 at the Metcalfe Lion’s Den. The banquet was hosted by the Vernon Dairy club and was a very enjoyable evening. Sixteen members of the sheep club received their project plates, and special awards were presented. Top Senior Member for 2013 went to Ryan Gallagher, and Nathan McDougall won Top Junior Member. Tim Oude Egberink was the recipient of the Top First Year Member Award. The “I Pledge” Awards, donated by Evergreen Ridge Farms, were given to members who best displayed one of the four aspects of the 4-H pledge. The “Head” award was won by Clayton Hall for club leadership. Leanne Zuiderveen was the worthy recipient of the “Heart” award for perseverance. The “Hands” Award for teamwork was earned by Mitchell Bazinet. Rhiannah Gallagher was the winner of the “Health” Award for enthusiasm and sportsmanship. All club members received items from the Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency and the Canadian Cooperative Wool Growers. Congratulations to all members for their outstanding accomplishments this year! Thank you to our club leaders, Colleen Acres and Carol Hall, for making this year so fun and informative.
