Essex 4-H
(Posted March 26, 2012)

On March 23-25th five representatives from the Essex County 4-H Leaders’ Association travelled to the Waterloo Inn & Conference Centre to attend the 4-H Ontario ‘Volunteer Conference & Annual Meeting (CAM). This year’s theme “The Future Looks Bright” was a perfect selection for a very positive, fun and active 4-H year in our county.

Susan Brown, Kimberly Heaton, Anne Conrad, Shannon Willmesma and Jeff Stratichuk attended various workshops including Fundraising within your Association, Taking Meeting Minutes, Working with Different Personalities, 4-H in Other Provinces (P.E.I. , Quebec and Alberta), Spotlight on New Projects (Snowmobiling is NEW for 2012, as is the delicious Milk Makes it Better program), Building Community Partnerships, Effective Use of Youth Leaders, and the much enjoyed Square Dancing Project.

4-H representatives from our county had the special honour of celebrating Susan Brown’s 20-year recognition for volunteer service to 4-H at the Monsanto Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, as well as see our local president Anne Conrad acclaimed to the 2012 & 2013 Ontario 4-H Council Board of Directors. Congratulations to both ladies on their successes.

In other 4-H news, the new ‘locally approved’ 4-H Popcorn Club has received official 4-H Ontario or ‘provincial’ approval. This club, which is being run in Leamington by Kimberly & Marshall Heaton will be starting up in April. The local 4-H Exchange Club has been accepted into the 4-H Exchange Program and will be partnering with a 4-H group from Canwood, Saskatchewan this summer. The exchange club will be fundraising to host the group from Saskatchewan and are looking for any local businesses to sponsor their events and outings. 4-H Ontario is still looking for stories about and photographs of your involvement in 4-H in honour of 4-H Ontario’s 100th Anniversary Celebration in 2015; Region 6 (which includes Essex) will be hosting the CAM in 2014 (in Waterloo) and we will have an amazing chance to showcase our county’s assets at that time.

We’d like to take this moment to thank all of our parents, volunteers, leaders, board of directors and community friends & partners for all they do everyday to make Essex 4-H an excellent way for our members to ‘learn to do by doing’.
