2012 Junior Beef Expo

March 10th & 11th

Western Fair - Agriplex (London, ON)

Local Essex 4-H Members Cody and Brandon Rogers as well as Jackie Wismer participated in the 2012 Junior Beef Expo March 10th and 11th at the Western Fair Agriplex in London Ontario. There were over 250 head of cattle being shown by 4-H members from across Ontario. Many of these animals will be going on to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto this coming November.

Cody placed 2nd in his class and had to go back into the show ring for the overall Grand Champion market animal class. Although he was not selected for the Grand or Reserve Grand Champion animal he still had a decent showing. Brandon was in the same class as Cody and he placed 4th in the class. Again, Brandon had a very respectful placing in a tough class.

A few comments from the judge included that he liked how well put together the animals were. The judge really liked Cody’s steer and thought that it was ‘as stout and compact as he has seen’. The judge commented to Brandon that he can hardly wait to see how his steer fills out as he gets older and grows into his body. Both of these steers will be entered into the Queen’s Guineas Competition at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair this upcoming November.

Jackie Wismer placed 5th in her class. Her market heifer is coming along nicely but at this early show was a touch on the smaller size compared to some of the competition. This heifer has lots of time to grow and get bigger and with more time will be one to look for at the Queens Guineas this fall as well. Jackie did very well in showmanship placing third in her class.

For this being a very early show and one of the first ones of the show season the County of Essex was well represented by these three members. A lot of good cattle were at this show and they are feeling good about how well their animals are doing against the rest of the 4-H members from across Ontario. Brandon and Cody and their steers are headed to Orangeville the first part of April for the Youth Forum.

Wishing these three local youth all the best of luck in their future showings. We can’t wait to see them at the Royal this fall!
