Krazy Kernels

On Wednesday April 11th the ‘Mr. Popper's Popcorn Club’ gathered at for our second 4-H Popcorn Club meeting. First, we had an Easter Egg hunt in the backyard and found chocolate coins and golden eggs. When we went inside we opened the golden eggs and found them to be filled with popcorn kernels which we then counted before popping.

There was 1,254 kernels in total. After we air popped the kernels there were 108 that did not pop. That is about 8.6% not popping or a ‘popablility’ of 91.4% – way below what is expected of a high quality popcorn (we plan to do the test again with a brand name popcorn next time to see if there is a difference). Did you know that the kernels that don't pop are called "spinsters" or “old maids”.

We also learnt about the nutritional value of popcorn. One cup of air popped popcorn is only 31 calories, 0g fat, 1 fiber, 1g protein. Compared to a bag of chips, popcorn is a much healthier snack.

We then listened to the song “Popcorn” by an old music band called ‘Hot Buttered’, and got to watch a video of a popcorn kernel popping in slow motion. Our next meeting is April 18th in Leamington – I wonder what will be popping next?
