On Monday, August 19th, the East Carleton 4-H Sheep Club gathered at Maple Meadow Farms, owned by club leader Colleen Acres, and welcomed veterinarian Dr. Heather Aitken from the Rideau-St. Lawrence Veterinarian Clinic. The theme of the evening was “Dealing with Internal Parasites in Sheep”. The meeting began with the 4-H pledge. Then, the club members assisted Dr. Aitken in pregnancy-checking ewes with an ultrasound. The club watched the screen of the computer to see if the ewes were pregnant. After checking the ewes, the members made their way to the hay barn where they viewed faecal samples with a microscope. The club got a good look at parasite eggs. The group also viewed a display board made by Leanne Zuiderveen showing the parasite cycle and how to remove worms. The club discussed different parasites and worms found in sheep that have been exceptionally problematic for the local sheep industry this year. The 4-H Sheep Club thanks Dr. Aitken for coming to the meeting and teaching us how to deal with parasites in sheep.
