Amber Underwood Memorial News Competition

For current 4-H members. Junior Category 9-14, Senior Category 15-21

Calling all young writers! Entrants must write a 500 word news-style report on the following topic: What does being a 4-H'er mean to you?

Junior Category: 9–14 (Current 4-H members only)

Senior Category: 15–21 (Current 4-H members only)

The competition aims to provide 4-H Ontario youth with an opportunity to showcase their writing prowess. To enter:

  • Complete the Amber Underwood Memorial News Competition Application Form
  • Write a 500 word news style report on one of the following topics
    •  An interview with a 4-H alumnus which can include a past member or volunteer, about how 4-H benefitted them. 
    • What does the updated 4-H Pledge mean to you?

Entry Criteria

Entries must be:

  • based on the current calendar year
  • a maximum of 500 words
  • type written and double spaced with one inch margins
  • in 11 point Arial font
  • the original work of the member

Submissions will be judged based on the following criteria:

Content: 30 pts
Writing Style: 25 pts
Originality: 25 pts
Spelling/Grammar: 15 pts
Presentation: 5 pts

Please note: presentation points include how instructions were followed (i.e. spacing, etc.).
